Studying abroad is an adventure that many students dream of. If you are considering a semester in Scandinavia, you are in for a treat. This region is known for its stunning landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture. From the fjords of Norway to the design capital of Sweden, there is so much to explore. In this guide, we will cover everything you need to know to make the most of your Scandinavian semester abroad.

Why did I chose Sweden?

Scandinavia is made up of three countries: Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. Each country has its own unique charm and attractions. Here are a few reasons why I considered Sweden - and why you should as well!

  • Quality Education and minimal Language Barriers: Scandinavian universities are known for their high academic standards. Many programs are taught, most business and a lot of small-talk held in English, making it easier for international students and workers to adapt.

  • Cultural Experiences: From Viking history to modern design, Scandinavia offers a rich cultural tapestry. You can explore museums, art galleries, and historical sites.

  • Natural Beauty: The landscapes are breathtaking. You can hike in the mountains, relax by the lakes, or - if you´re lucky enough - enjoy the northern lights.

  • Sustainability: Scandinavian countries are leaders in sustainability. You will learn about eco-friendly practices and innovative solutions to global challenges.

Preparing for Your Trip

Before you embark on your journey, there are a few things you need to prepare. Here are some essential steps to take:

Research Your Destination

Each Scandinavian country has its own culture and lifestyle. Research the city where you will be studying. Learn about local customs, food, and transportation options. In my case here are some things I researched and already knew about Sweden - specifically Stockholm.

Language

While many people speak English, learning a few basic phrases in Swedish can be helpful. It shows respect for the culture and can enhance your experience. People always appreciate you showing interest in their culture. They are usually quite shocked (in a good way) when they hear you speak Swedish.

Weather

Scandinavian weather can be unpredictable - similar to Germany. Be prepared for cold winters and mild summers. Pack appropriate clothing, including warm layers and waterproof gear - but don´t forget the swim suit. Once summer hits (17C and up) Swedes embrace it!

Transportation

Public transportation is efficient and reliable in Sweden. Familiarize yourself with the local transit system. Consider getting a student or monthly pass for discounts on buses and trains.

On a different note - While you´re in Sweden Embrace the Culture!

One of the best parts of working abroad is immersing yourself in a new culture. Here are some ways I look forward to embrace Scandinavian culture:

  • Try Local Cuisine (even tho I am not much of a sea food person)

  • Explore the Outdoors

  • Making Friends and Building Connections

  • Attend Social Events (lot´s of them will be hosted by the KMH-students)

  • Connect with Locals

You also don´t want to miss out on Travel Opportunities

Sweden is well-connected to other European countries. I am consider traveling to nearby destinations during breaks or weekends - you should too. No matter what country you chose!

Lastly some very important (boring) things to keep in mind:

Staying Safe and Healthy

Your safety and well-being should be a priority during your semester abroad. Here are some tips to stay safe: Support Services

Most work-places offer support services for international workers. Don’t hesitate to reach out for help with work related or personal challenges.

Know Emergency Numbers

Familiarize yourself with local emergency numbers and procedures. Keep important contacts saved on your phone.

Stay Informed

Stay updated on local news and events. Be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts.

Take Care of Your Health

I will have health insurance through Erasmus during my stay - make sure you do as well. Stay active, eat well, and prioritize your mental health.

The Adventure Awaits

Studying abroad in Sweden is an incredible opportunity. You will gain valuable experiences, make lifelong friends, and create unforgettable memories. Embrace the adventure, and let the beauty of this region inspire you. Your Erasmus semester will be a chapter in your life that you will cherish forever.
